I came across this interview of Kanye West in 2005 with Charlie Rose. The excitement in his voice when he speaks on ideas and concepts that he is passionate about reminds me of myself. I feel that as a Contemporary being, West has exemplified cultural and creative power. With Rose, he expresses sentiments that I feel remain a consistent theme in his ethos:
"...only thing promised is death-so basically, life is like a game- so you have to play the game..."
"i say things to spark people's attention"
"i try to put my friends in better positions"
"I change music to maybe change the world"
As someone in pursuit of becoming my best self, I envision my craft allowing, or making space, for me to expand beyond barriers set in place to keep me in place. I feel West is someone who is one of many people who exist as a reminder for me to always catapult myself to be much more than I was yesterday. My belief in genius and true growth rests in tandem with a person's ability to be open to perspectives while being especially alert of one's own position in space.
In space, it is a person's decision to decide where they are; some are hesitant, some feel behind, others feel ahead, and a handful feel that in any space, they are the best version of themselves. Something that I enjoy about listening to West is that his belief in self, encourages me to reflect on my family and my personal belief in myself. That consistent mantra to not only say it behind closed doors, but also in the comfort of your own space and in front of an audience; whether your audience is one person or 50,000 people. The belief in self grants people the security to believe in you.
